Haosi Howard Chen is originally from Shanghai and migrated to the United States as a child, where he completed his undergraduate studies at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA), majoring in composition as well as piano. During his undergraduate studies, he received scholarships as well as numerous awards, and then served as an adjunct music theory instructor at UCLA. He completed his master's degree in composition with Wolfgang Rihm and Markus Hechtle at the Karlsruhe University of Music with honors as a scholarship recipient of the Landesgraduiertenförderung; he is continuing his studies there with the goal of taking the soloist exam. He received important impulses from Mark Andre, Brian Ferneyhough, Rebecca Saunders, Johannes Schöllhorn and artworks by Sean Scully, among others.  
In 2019, he won the solo category prize of the Torre della Quarda (Italy) for his piano cycle SEHNSÜCHTE. Through collaborations with ensembles such as the Aleph Guitar Quartet, SCHOLA Heidelberg, the International Ensemble Modern Academy, wild Up, the Badische Staatskapelle, Quartetto Indaco, and others, his music has been premiered in the U.S. and Europe and broadcast on KUSC (Los Angeles classical radio) and SWR2. In 2021 he received the Wolfgang Rihm Scholarship, sponsored by the Hoepfner Foundation.
