"In a lecture hall of the university, in a place that serves learning, exchange and encounter, a student shot at his fellow students, killed a fellow student and injured other students and threatened teachers. ... The academic community is deeply shocked and affected by this inconceivable act. ... For Ruperto Carola, this expression of violence, this attack on human life, is also an attack on its academic self-image, which we as a community will oppose with all determination."
This was stated by the rector of Ruperto Carola, the University of Heidelberg, Prof. Dr. Bernhard Eitel.
A funeral service will be held today, Monday, in the Heidelberg University Church. The state government has ordered flags of mourning.
In solidarity with all universities and colleges in the state, the Karlsruhe University of Music shares the mourning for the 23-year-old victim. We wish the injured a speedy and complete recovery, and all members of the university that they may regain their mental stability in the face of the inconceivable.
