The Karlsruhe University of Music mourns the death of Peter Weibel, who passed away on March 1, 2023 after a short illness at the age of 78. In his more than 24 years as artistic and scientific director of the Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe, Peter Weibel provided creative and intellectual impulses in the cultural region and far beyond. He considered the Karlsruhe University of Music, whose 50th anniversary ceremony he attended as late as October 2022, to be a unique place of activity, where work is done with singular competence to guarantee music its future and its freedom. Peter Weibel's intensive relationship with the Karlsruhe University of Music grew out of the dialogue with Wolfgang Rihm, about which he summarized: "Hardly any other music university in Germany can point to such a dense and high quality of professors, students and alumni as the Karlsruhe University of Music. Not only does the world come to Karlsruhe and Karlsruhe go to the world through its alumni, but the crucial thing is: everything we expect from music comes from Karlsruhe."
The faculty and students of the Karlsruhe University of Music will remember Peter Weibel with joy and gratitude.
