String Quartet Lab starts in July

With a new teaching offer for quartets, the string section would like to enable interested students to deal intensively with string chamber music for a week. The teaching quartet is the vision string quartet, Berlin. The String Quartet Lab will take place from 4 to 9 July 2022 and will end with the awarding of the audience prize of the Sparkassen Kulturstiftung for the best quartet. The aim is above all to create an occasion for encounters and exchange between students, the teaching string quartet and the concert-goers. The final concert on 8 July at 7:30 pm is dedicated to this purpose. The students will then present the results of their week-long work. The lab will conclude with an evaluation meeting of all participants on 9 July.

A film matinée in the Schauburg, Karlsruhe, on 03.07. at 11 a.m. will be the prelude. The film '4' about the French string quartet Quatuor Ébène by filmmaker Daniel Kutschinski ( will be shown. The film will be followed by a film discussion moderated by students of music journalism.

In the development and realisation of the String Quartet Lab, the String Section, Prof. Dr. Christoph Seibert (IMWI) and the Institute for Music Journalism work together in an interdisciplinary way.

The String Quartet Lab is a funding project of the Foundation for the Promotion of the Karlsruhe University of Music, whose tasks include supporting innovative offers of the university.

Up-to-date information on the laboratory will be available shortly on the Foundation's website

Documentary lm about the French string quartet Quatuor Ébène and the difficulty of making music. "The world of so-called 'classical music' is thoroughly mendacious in its public presentation. The advertising departments present the classical heroes as supermen who have everything going for them, who live happy and fulfilled lives
and fulfilled lives and only do something like 'work' in the evening at a concert, for which all the people are at their feet.
This is by no means the case, and Daniel Kutschinski's film is one of the most beautiful ways to see for yourself."
