Since the winter semester 2018/19, Matthias Beckert has been Professor of Choral Conducting at the University of Music Karlsruhe. Previously, he was professor of orchestral conducting at the Detmold Academy of Music and professor of choral conducting at the University of Music Würzburg. Before that, he worked at the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media and was a visiting professor at the Academy of Music in Kraków.

As a conductor, he leads the Cantabile Regensburg vocal ensemble and the Monteverdi Choir Würzburg. He has led these ensembles to multiple prizes at Bavarian and German choir competitions. In addition, he works with radio choirs as well as instrumental groups such as the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra, the Jena Philharmonic, the Vogtland Philharmonic, the Gotha Thuringian Philharmonic, and the Hof Symphony Orchestra. He regularly conducts early music ensembles such the Concert Royal, Cologne; Würzburger Hofmusik; and the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin.

Productive associations link him with noted composers such as Krzysztof Penderecki, Wolfram Buchenberg, Zsolt Gárdonyi, Heinz Werner Zimmermann, Toshio Hosokawa, and Wilfried Hiller. He has made many radio, television, and CD recordings for labels including CPO, Helbling, Musicaphon, Spektral, and TYXart.
